The European Union (EU) is an intergovernmental conglomerate of union states formed in 1992. There are currently 27 member nations within the EU, but there is continuing efforts to have every European country join. Critics of the EU say that by entering into this union will eventually strip each nation of its sovereignty.

With approximately 490 million people, covering a large amount of land, the EU is now the largest political and economic faction on the continent. According to 2006 statistics, the EU has a GDP of $14.2 trillion (USD), giving it 35% of the world’s GDP and making it the world’s largest economy.
